Breathe. Move. Return

My Story

Healing through movement has always been at the heart of my journey. I began dancing at age 11 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and went on to become an A.I.D.T-certified instructor, teaching modern, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, funk, and tap for over a decade. Alongside this, I studied Exercise Science and Kinesiology, deepening my understanding of anatomy, alignment, and injury prevention—principles that continue to shape my teaching today.

Later, my love for rhythm and connection led me into the world of music, where I became one of South Africa’s leading DJs and the first woman to host and produce a national electronic music show on 5FM. But after years of high-paced living, I developed a debilitating panic disorder that brought me to the healing path of yoga. I began practicing in 2006 at a local ashram, but in the early days, I wasn’t truly present. As a dancer, I believed yoga was just about making beautiful shapes—and assumed I could do everything with ease. One day, I entered a headstand too quickly, without mindfulness, and fell into a backbend that compacted my cervical vertebrae. That moment was a wake-up call. It taught me that yoga is not about performance—it’s a life science rooted in awareness, humility, and healing.

Through steady, mindful practice, I healed my panic disorder, my neck and various other ailments—strengthening my knees after years of dancing, finding stability and presence during pregnancy, and rebuilding strength postpartum. I’ve come to believe deeply in yoga’s ability to adapt to every stage of life, and in the profound intelligence of the body when we listen and move with intention.

Since then, I’ve completed over 850 hours of teacher training in Hatha, ISHTA, and Pregnancy Yoga. Today, I teach Vinyasa, Yin, Slow Flow, and Restorative Yoga to individuals, groups, and corporate clients. I also facilitate retreats and lead workshops on yoga, mindfulness, embodiment, and women’s wellness—always with an emphasis on presence, alignment, and heart-centered connection.

Testimonials

Testimonials •

  • “Erica Phillipson integrates decades of cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary, mindful movement into her flows - part South African strength and soul, part Topanga, CA spirituality and serenity. She reads the room, makes real-time adjustments, and delivers a bespoke vinyasa that allows practitioners to leave class and still ‘live on the mat.’”

    Andrew Parrott, Topanga

  • I met Erica at my local yoga studio in Topanga and she changed the way I look at yoga. She helped me see that yoga is not about poses, or acrobatics, but about healing the body using your own body. I am so grateful that Erica is now my personal teacher as our one on one sessions enable us to really get to the root cause of my physical issues. And through her thoughtful and very knowledgeable practice, Erica has gently and lovingly helped me heal from and given me vital tools for how to cope with and even overcome my pain.

  • Collaborating with Erica on group workshops has been both joyful and deeply nourishing. She brings a rare blend of depth and playfulness to her teaching, and that same spirit shines through in how she shows up as a partner. Creating alongside her is inspiring—she has a natural ability to drop into a flow that feels both expansive and grounded, embodying a true yogi’s spirit. I would wholeheartedly recommend working with her and look forward to many more workshops together.

  • "Erica’s classes are a guided journey. You drop in, breathe, and let her lead you through an hour that feels both grounding and expansive. Her presence is calm and loving—it sets the tone from the start. And the way she speaks? So intentional, so clear—you can feel the care in every part of the flow. Whether you’re new or have been practicing for years, you’re challenged in all the right ways. She gets you into all the little nooks and crannies, especially if you’ve been sitting all day. I feel so calm and connected to myself during and after class—it’s magic. I never miss it. Highly recommend."

    Claudia Kruse, CCO Kosas Beauty

  • "Erica brings tremendous knowledge and experience to the practice, combined with an innate wisdom that truly sets her apart. Her teaching style is grounded yet playful, and always infused with genuine joy."

    Azura

  • "I just had an amazing 1 on 1, highly recommended for a focused session that allows ample time and space. I initially came in to simply relax and find my yoga flow again but I left with so much more. I was recently injured and she took that into consideration and guided me gently through a Yin Yoga sequence focused on breathing, stretching, and grounding. Very pleasant and serene. I experienced several releases that I desperately needed for the past few months. Ahh! Erica is a true healer! Gifted. I’ll definitely be coming back. Thank you so much…"

Rebekah, Topanga Resident & Social Worker

  • I live in Rhode Island but travel to LA frequently. Since I have an active practice at home, I’m always looking for a good studio when I’m away. In LA, Topanga is my go-to — and Erica’s practice is truly something special. The moment you walk in, her energy and spirit surround you. Over the past year, her class has become something I genuinely look forward to. Each session is unique yet familiar in the best way. I’m never disappointed — even when we're holding blocks up for what feels like forever! Her class is truly a ray of sunshine.

Marisa Kuizenga, owner of The Mission Guild

  • Practicing with Erica is truly a gift. Her classes are more than just movement—they are a journey inward. She holds space with such presence and care, guiding you to drop in, stay connected, and truly embody the practice. What sets her apart is that she’s not just a yoga instructor—she’s a true teacher of yoga in its fullest sense: union of body, mind, and spirit. Erica creates a space that feels both grounded and expansive. Her ability to tune into what each individual might need, while still crafting a class that flows seamlessly, is rare and beautiful. Every time I practice with her, I leave feeling more whole, more aware, and more at home in myself.

  • Erica is a rare combination of deep knowledge, enveloping spirituality and good vibes. She shares a meditative yet vigorous practice, always with the perfect music cues!
